That smell isn't just unpleasant — it's a signal. In almost every case it means something organic is growing or sitting inside your unit. Here are the usual culprits, in order of how often we find them.

Cause 01
Mould on the evaporator coil (most common)

The cold coil inside your indoor unit is constantly damp from condensation. In Malaysia's humidity, that dampness plus trapped dust becomes a perfect home for mould and bacteria. When the unit switches on, air blows across the colony and pushes that musty, sour smell into the room.

The fix: a chemical wash. Water cleaning alone won't kill the mould embedded in the coil fins — it needs a chemical treatment.
Cause 02
A blocked drain line or standing water

Condensation is supposed to drain away through a small pipe. When that line clogs with algae and slime, water sits in the drain pan and turns stagnant — giving off a damp, swampy smell. You may also notice water dripping from the indoor unit at the same time.

The fix: the drain line needs flushing and clearing. Often paired with a service so the pan is cleaned out properly.
Cause 03
A clogged, dirty filter

Filters trap dust, and in humid air that trapped dust gets damp and starts to smell. A heavily clogged filter also reduces airflow, which keeps the coil damper for longer — feeding the mould problem above.

The fix: this one you can do yourself — slide out the filters, wash them under running water, dry fully, and refit. If the smell remains, the coil is the real source.
Cause 04
"Dirty sock syndrome" — a sharp, sweaty smell

A distinct smell like dirty socks or gym clothes, strongest in the first minutes after switching on, is a known issue caused by bacteria building up on a damp coil. It's harmless but very noticeable, and it won't go away on its own.

The fix: a chemical wash to clear the coil, the same as Cause 01.

How to get rid of the smell

Work through it in this order:

1

Clean the filters

Wash and fully dry them. If a mild, dusty smell disappears, that was the cause.

2

Run the fan to dry the coil

Set the unit to fan-only for 20–30 minutes after cooling. Drying the coil reduces mould growth — a good habit, though it won't remove an existing colony.

3

Book a chemical wash if the smell persists

If a musty or sour smell remains after cleaning the filters, the coil and/or drain are the source — and that needs professional cleaning, not a DIY spray.

When to call a professional

Call us if the smell is musty, sour, or sock-like and survives a filter clean; if it comes with water dripping; or if cooling has dropped at the same time. These all point to the coil or drain, which need dismantling to clean safely. Avoid "aircond deodoriser" sprays sold online — they mask the smell for a day or two but leave the mould feeding underneath.

Smelly aircond — quick reference

  1. Musty / sour smell — mould on the coil → chemical wash
  2. Damp, swampy smell + dripping — blocked drain → flush & service
  3. Mild dusty smell — dirty filter → wash filters yourself
  4. Dirty-sock smell on start-up — bacteria on coil → chemical wash
  5. Burning / electrical smell — switch off and call us immediately, this is not a cleaning issue
